Architectural Artifacts

I took these photos at Architectural Artifacts, an 80,000-square-foot antique mecca that feels more like a museum than a store. If you’re looking for, say, Louis Sullivan-designed elevator doors as an accent piece for your library and are willing to drop $350,000 on your purchase, fire up the U-Haul truck and head to 4325 N. Ravenswood Ave. Actually, at that price, I’m guessing they’d throw the delivery in for free.

Not everything at Architectural Artifacts is ultra-expensive. My teenage nephew traveled with me to the store, and he purchased a vintage barber’s box for less than a hundred bucks. But the appeal of the place, at least for the likes of me, rests in what you can see, not what you can buy.
